Before Kirksville’s Rainbow Basin Ski Lodge closed down during 1991, local residents visited the lodge to eat, relax and enjoy the slopes. The snowmakers ran at night and the lights glistened on the snow-covered hills.
Local residents Linda and Jack Pickett managed the ski lodge before it shut down due to higher temperatures not cold enough to maintain the snow produced. Linda Pickett says at one point someone circulated a false story claiming the ski lodge closed because of the death of a skier. Fake ghost stories such as this are what attract people to the abandoned ski lodge today, which Pickett says was a beautiful building in its time. The upper level once had a fireplace and a cafeteria with picnic tables, while the lower level had a gift shop, ski repair shop and lounge area where they catered big dinners for different organizations.
