Wrestling picks up momentum over weekend

The Truman State University wrestling team took home victories for the team and several individuals at two Iowa matches last week.

Before last week, the only victory the wrestling team had for the season was against Hannibal-LaGrange University, and the highest any individual wrestler had ranked in an event was fifth place. That changed when the team beat Graceland University 31-22 and every individual Bulldog placed no lower than fifth place at Central College’s Last Chance Open.

Truman won six of the ten matches against Graceland on Thursday, featuring redshirt junior Zach Taylor’s win by forfeit, freshman Nick Peglow’s win by decision, Mutuwa’s win by major decision, and three wins by falls from senior Luke Komotos, junior Sam Reeves and redshirt junior Caleb Osborn.

Mutuwa and Peglow led the Bulldogs with first place finishes in their classes at the Last Chance Open. Peglow won the 141 weight class with two falls and Mutuwa won the heavyweight class with a bye and two technical falls. Sophomores Jules Joseph and Shane Gallagher each placed fourth in their classes, and sophomore Willie Jackson took fifth.

The team gets a week off before heading to St. Cloud, Minnesota, to face St. Cloud State University for the NCAA Super 3 Regional from Feb. 24-25.
