As someone who read the book and didn’t care for it, I think “The Maze Runner” was a great improvement. Of course the movie had the same confusing story with underdeveloped characters, but it got to the point more quickly than the book. The film didn’t waste time on the protagonist Thomas’ inner monologues or […]

You have your Pandora set on your favorite station when a subtle guitar riff stops you in your tracks. A powerful drum beat causes you to stop what you’re doing and turn up the song. You’ve never heard the song, but fifteen seconds into the track, you are hooked. Sometimes music can overcome a person […]

Mo’ne Davis has caught the world’s attention. Green Hills Literary Lantern, a national literary journal managed and published at Truman State, is celebrating its 25th anniversary.
The latest issue was published online at ghll.truman.edu during the first week of July. It includes 20 works of fiction, 24 poems, five pieces of nonfiction and four reviews.
“We are, once again, as we have 25 times before, publishing a really good literary annual with terrific fiction and nonfiction prose and poetry,” said Adam Davis, managing editor and English professor.
Davis said the most recent edition of the GHLL includes a preface he wrote that celebrates the journal’s 25th anniversary.
Davis said one of his favorite parts about the journal is while it does include pieces by established writers, the GHLL also publishes unknown writers. Anyone can submit to the journal via mail or email.
“For many of these young writers, the Literary Lantern has been their leg up,” Davis said. “It’s been their way into the profession. It’s so rewarding to see a young writer getting started in the world.”

It was notable for its back-to-front structure, starting with the chorus and two short verses. At the time of recording, […]

If it wasn’t already apparent, Annie Clark — a.k.a. St. Vincent — does what she wants. Her 2007 debut “Marry Me” was eclectic but not too odd. Her 2009 “Actor” release featured more distortion and dissonance but kept pretty woodwind arrangements. During 2011 she explored the electronic realm and came out with a dark, inventive album called “Strange Mercy.” After collaborating and touring with art-pop maestro David Byrne on “Love This Giant,” 31-year-old Clark returned with dyed white hair and a self-titled whopper.
