Sports Update 4.19.12

The Truman men’s’ baseball team earned a split in their weekend series against Fort Hays State.  The Bulldogs lost game one, 6-2, but dominated the field in game two, 15-4. Pete Furich had a stand-out series as he hit 7/13 with three doubles, two homeruns, and seven RBI’s. The Bulldogs will play the next 12 out of 14 games at home beginning with Missouri Western State for a four-game series this weekend. Senior catcher Pete Jurich says the team needs to keep up their offensive momentum in their upcoming games.

 

The Truman women’s softball team finished with a split against Washburn University on Tuesday afternoon. The Lady ‘Dogs won game one, 4-3, but fell in game two with a score of 1-0.  In game one, Kelsea Dorsey threw a complete game with six strikeouts and one walk, earning her 14th victory. In game two, senior Ashley pitched well for the Bulldogs allowing just one run and four hits over eight innings but was given the loss.  Truman will return to action tomorrow for a doubleheader against Northwest Missouri State at 3:00 p.m. and will host Senior Day against the University of Sioux Falls on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

 

Both Truman tennis teams played in their final home duals of the season on Monday against Southwest Baptist. The women lost to the Bearcats, 9-0, and the men almost escaped with a victory but were defeated 5-4. Jake Ohlhausen and Griffin Smith led the men with their win in the doubles division as Eric McCollough and Mark Sturley played in their final match on Truman’s campus. On the women’s side, Jennifer Hawkins, Dagmar Velez, and Ellen Russell also played in their last home matches for Truman. Senior Eric McCullough says the team needs to win doubles in order to be successful against Emporia State in the MIAA tournament.

 

The Truman women’s golf team finished in fifth place at the MIAA championships on Tuesday. The Bulldogs cut 24 strokes off of their day-one score, for a two-day total score of 700. Jessica Tomash earned a 79 on day two of the event and was one of only four players to break 80. The Bulldogs will finish up their regular season this weekend at the Illinois-Springfield Spring Fling.
