Truman senior Sierra Gregg received the Student Achievement Award from the St. Louis Society for the Blind and Visually Impaired on April 13. Gregg was chosen because of her work to make historical documents in presidential libraries accessible to the blind and visually impaired. Gregg, who is visually impaired, was involved in a project to digitize the records in 13 presidential libraries.

Gun Control Plan Blocked by Senate

The Senate blocked a bipartisan plan to expand background checks for gun buyers Wednesday. The vote was 54-46. A bill must have at least 60 votes to pass in the Senate. Failure to pass the bill would be considered a setback for President Obama’s campaign to decrease gun violence. Opponents of recent gun control bills say new proposals could result in government infringement on the right to bear arms.

Explosion at Fertilizer Plant in Texas

Another explosion, this time in Texas, has also made national headlines. Authorities have confirmed five to 15 individuals died as a result of an explosion at a fertilizer plant in west, Texas. More than 100 others have been wounded. Searches for bodies and survivors are still underway. The blast damaged more than 70 buildings including local schools and homes. Governor Rick Perry has declared the area a disaster zone and is requesting President Obama to declare a state of emergency.

Bombing in Boston

A bombing at the Boston Marathon has rocked the nation leaving three dead and about 180 injured. Some victims are still hospitalized but doctors say the remaining victims are expected to survive. The FBI investigation has identified possible suspects in surveillance cameras. The possible suspects were seen dropping bags that may have contained the bombs at the scene. President Obama has signed an emergency declaration for the state of Massachusetts, which will make federal funds available to the state.
