Positive Perspectives on Local Voting

by Joe Bell 11/4/2008 2:03:23 PM

Picture    All appears to be calm on the home front.

Voting in Adair County seems to be proceeding smoothly. Press time, no problems have been reported at any polls in Adair County. The Adair County Clerk Sandy Collop said that many steps had been taken to ensure everything went smoothly on Election Day.

“As far as we can tell [everything has gotten off to a smooth start],” Collop said. “We will not have any ballot shortages. I know that for a fact. We have done a lot of preparation in order to try and get the voters in and out as quickly as we can today. Things seem to be going just pretty well.”

At the polling station inside the Student Union Building, poll workers said they felt that things were proceeding smoothly. They have been able to move a steady flow of voters through the poll with the assistance of greeters at the door. The greeters are equipped with palm pilots and are able to check identification to make sure voters are in the right place.

One pollster said that the greeters were a great help. They helped move voters through the process quickly. The greeters also made sure that no one had stand in line for very long.

The amount of voters turning out is already staggering. At the Moose Lodge polling station, one poll worker said that there was a much larger voter turnout than usual. At 9:30 this morning, 316 voters had already cast their ballots, a much larger number than had turned out at the same time for the previous presidential election.

County officials stand ready in case something does go wrong, however. Collop highlighted the ways that Adair County had prepared in case of a poll emergency.

“We have additional people that we can call on if someone gets sick or something like that,” Collop said “We have troubleshooters that are constantly roaming the precincts. So if there are any problems there, they are sent to each particular place. We’ve also hired greeters this time, so we have an abundance of people at the polls, so if for any reason we needed additional help we could use those people as well.”

Adair County polls continue to be ready as voters turn out in record numbers to cast their votes. So far, all appears to be proceeding exactly as planned.
