Some professors are giving extra credit for participating in the election or canceling classes altogether so students can vote, and one local business is sponsoring a unique promotion.
Professor of English Linda Seidel canceled her JINS 381 Public Issues and Political Rhetoric class today and also is offering extra credit to students who drive voters to their polling places or help out in other ways.
“I canceled class because I thought if I was going to ask them to do that, they need time to do it,” she said.
Seidel added that she created the class specifically for this election season and her course material focuses mainly on campaign rhetoric in respect to the media and public opinion.
Senior Missy Hastings said her physics lab was canceled in honor of it being Election Day. She said she celebrated the day by doing the homework for the class, in addition to voting and grabbing one of the free Barack Obama stickers being distributed by the College Democrats.
At Dyed Hyde Tattoos and Body Piercings late this morning, a group of about 10 Truman students lined up to receive a free piercing. Sophomore Allie McGrath said she was there to have her ear pierced.
“Piercings are usually really expensive, and this is really exciting that they [are] doing this,” she said. “I think it encouraged people to vote in a different way, which is kind of neat.”
McGrath said she found out about the promotion through friends.
Dyed Hyde owner Flash offered the free piercings as an incentive to get younger people to vote, according to the Oct. 23 issue of the Index.
“I'm doing this because I care about my country and the direction it's going,” he said in the Oct. 23 issue.
