Carnahan warns against text message scam

by Brent Foster 11/4/2008 5:08:26 PM

Missouri Secretary of State Robin Carnahan told Missouri voters they should be aware of a text messaging scam at a news conference earlier this afternoon. Carnahan said messages are being sent to cell phones telling people that “due to long lines today, all Obama voters are asked to vote on Wednesday.”

“I have no tolerance for anyone intentionally causing confusion on Election Day,” Carnahan said. “Every eligible Missourian should be able to cast their ballot today, and my office will immediately respond to any reports of misinformation.”

It is a crime in Missouri to knowingly provide false information regarding election procedures in order to prevent any person from going to the polls. It is considered a class one election offense, and is punishable by jail time.

Carnahan also said that, other than the text messaging scam, everything else seems to be going without a problem. She reminded people that as long as they are in line at 7 p.m. they will be allowed to cast a vote.

The messages have been forwarded to the U.S. Attorney’s office for further investigation.
