Our View on the Vigil Story

In the Feb. 20 issue of the Index, Sports Director Elowyn Wells wrote about the Ice Vigil held on Jan. 31 by student group Stop I.C.E Violence and College Democrats.

We, the Index Editorial Board, encourage students to continue organizing and attending events that represent issues they care about. It’s important for our community to stand up for what they believe in and speak out when they are privileged enough to do so.

The vigil organizer, Marcia Humphreys, said she wanted to host the event to help Kirksville feel less hopeless. We believe students like Humphrey should use their resources to advocate for issues they deem important.

Supporting or opposing causes publicly is essential to making changes. It’s easy to be overwhelmed by political discourse, but in times where the world is at odds, standing up for your beliefs is necessary.

We believe that organizations and individuals should continue to plan and attend events. Our campus and community deserve the right and opportunity to speak up.
