Immediately upon entering, the senses tingle from the fragrant and savory bakery treats, and the spirit is warmed by the welcoming smiles of the employees. In the kitchen, Parisian-trained chef Nathaniel Reid adds the finishing touches to a Helene pastry, which according to their menu consists of \u201calmond crumble, poached pears, caramel cream and chai tea chantilly.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1845\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1845\" style=\"width: 677px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tmn.truman.edu\/detours\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/03\/Screen-Shot-2019-03-03-at-2.33.31-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1845 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/tmn.truman.edu\/detours\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/03\/Screen-Shot-2019-03-03-at-2.33.31-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"677\" height=\"744\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tmn.truman.edu\/detours\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/03\/Screen-Shot-2019-03-03-at-2.33.31-PM.png 677w, https:\/\/tmn.truman.edu\/detours\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/03\/Screen-Shot-2019-03-03-at-2.33.31-PM-273x300.png 273w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 677px) 100vw, 677px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1845\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nathaniel Reid Bakery is a patisserie located in St. Louis County with the intention of merging French flavors with Midwestern charm.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Every step in perfecting the treats is intentional, as were many of the steps Reid took to get to where he is today \u2014 a master chef. Reid, a born and raised Missourian, studied at the University of Missouri.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI was studying biology there, and I did a summer internship and it just wasn\u2019t what I expected it to be \u2026 My mother suggested I should try cooking, and it just felt right,\u201d Reid said. \u201cSo when I went back to Mizzou, I switched my major to restaurant management.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Reid says he treasured his time learning the art of baking; however, being a chef was not always a popular career choice. Regardless, he did not let this stop him from his pursuit. He says he encourages others to find something they feel passionate about and something they can see themselves growing with.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">After graduating from the University of Missouri around 2000, Reid went to France where he studied at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI loved it \u2014 going to school for French cooking in France, you were immersed in it everywhere \u2026 school was all day long,\u201d Reid said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Reid says he has taken inspiration for his baking not just from Paris, but from all over the world, especially the Midwest. His love for Missouri and the people there brought him back after years of studying, teaching and baking internationally. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cMy family is from Southeast Missouri, and family is something that is very important to me,\u201d Reid said. \u201cI love Missouri. It\u2019s a wonderful place. I love the nature in the Midwest, what the Midwest stands for. I wanted to start a family here and start a business here.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The look and atmosphere of the bakery also has a &nbsp;Midwestern feel, and according to Reid, \u201cresembles that of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?client=safari&amp;channel=mac_bm&amp;biw=1440&amp;bih=748&amp;tbm=isch&amp;sa=1&amp;ei=MEN8XPOELufVjwSBsYmQBg&amp;q=1950s+ice+cream+parlor&amp;oq=1950s+ice+cream+parlor&amp;gs_l=img.3..0j0i24.1098.1098..1381...0.0..0.85.85.1......1....1..gws-wiz-img.-SwM3zTASLk\">a Midwestern 1950s\/1960s ice cream parlor.<\/a>\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Behind the counter, the walls have crisp black and white backsplash, and the pastries neatly rest behind sparkling glass. There are only seven seats, though, and that\u2019s more European style.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Nathaniel Reid Bakery serves pastries, sandwiches, cakes and quiches. For Reid and his staff, the bakery is about more than just the food, but the way the entire process makes each customer feel. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI want them to feel like it was an experience \u2014 the warm greeting, the presentation,\u201d Reid said. \u201cI really like them to feel the value of not just the products, but in the entirety of the process. We are fortunate and lucky to have them walk through our doors.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">First time customer Amy Grigsby had this to say about her experience. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI thought it was odd that it was located in a strip mall,\u201d Grigsby said. \u201cWhen I entered, however, I found it to be a darling little shop that smelled divine &#8230; I have not seen pastries this beautiful anywhere other than Sucre in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.neworleans.com\">New Orleans<\/a>. They were delicious and little works of art.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Grigsby says she had the Waldorf Chicken salad croissant for lunch and the Amber for dessert, which is a shortbread with salted caramel mousse and pecan caramel. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Nathaniel Reid Bakery is located at 11243 Manchester Road, Kirkwood, Missouri and is open Monday through Friday 7-6 and Saturdays 7-5.
