But for the few weeks ramping up to the Iowa caucuses Feb. 1, two of Des Moines\u2019s coffee shops were transformed into media broadcasting sets and gathering spaces for national journalists, caucus-goers and coffee shop regulars alike.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Java Joe\u2019s<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_893\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-893\" style=\"width: 199px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tmn.truman.edu\/detours\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/02\/DSC_0593.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-893\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-893 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/tmn.truman.edu\/detours\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/02\/DSC_0593-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_0593\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-893\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Java Joe&#8217;s is situated in the heart of downtown Des Moines.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Java Joe\u2019s coffee house, the original micro roaster coffee house in Des Moines, is situated right in the heart of the downtown area in the Court Avenue District. Java Joe\u2019s manager Robb Riggle describes the clientele of the restaurant as varied as the population of the city, while still maintaining the calm coffeehouse vibe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe draw in an eclectic group of people, business community leaders, people writing books, more philosophical types, hipster and theater people, because of our theater space,\u201d Riggle says. \u00a0\u201cWe\u2019re a very unique coffee house, and we have the ability to draw a lot of people. The location is also normally calm &#8230; people will come for eight to nine hours, come in and write books. It\u2019s very calm. I hesitate to use the word, but it\u2019s chill.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A common trait among the range of customers is their awareness of the political significance of Iowa during the presidential elections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI think it&#8217;s a hub of people that are politically engaged,\u201d Riggle says. \u201cThey respect that Iowa has that status of first in nation. We have a lot of say. They understand that we\u2019re making history every four years.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_888\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-888\" style=\"width: 199px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tmn.truman.edu\/detours\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/02\/DSC_0571.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-888\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-888 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/tmn.truman.edu\/detours\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/02\/DSC_0571-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_0571\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-888\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The smell of freshly roasted coffee beans greets Java Joe&#8217;s customers as they walk in the door.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Thanks to Java Joe\u2019s position as a local gathering place, combined with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">MSNBC\u2019s \u201cMorning Joe\u201d host Joe Scarborough\u2019s admiration of the space, the television network first selected Java Joe\u2019s during 2008 as an on-site location for the show during the weeks leading up to the caucuses, Riggle says. The show continued to use the space during the 2012 caucus season and came back again this year. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The hosts usually interview a lot if not all of the candidates before the caucuses, Riggle says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery vote counts, and every person you meet counts, but they\u2019re still willing to take time for 10-15 interviews,\u201d Riggle says.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With a TV production studio placed in the rear of the restaurant, the coffee shop\u2019s atmosphere shifted from calm and eclectic to buzzing and excited. Over the weekend leading up to the caucuses on Monday, Feb. 1, with the MSNBC truck parked outside the shop and an MSNBC directors chair seated to the right of the front entrance, visitors knew this wasn\u2019t the normal Java Joe\u2019s. Inside, regulars sipped coffee and read books alongside hurried journalists from Hungary and Germany. Show employees furiously typed on their laptops, and crew members hauled equipment, giving the coffee shop a rushed backstage feel \u2014 it was difficult to find a corner that isn\u2019t exposed to the high energy. Customer Jennifer Klampe observed the excitement from a table near the entrance.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_889\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-889\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tmn.truman.edu\/detours\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/02\/DSC_0573.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-889\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-889 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/tmn.truman.edu\/detours\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/02\/DSC_0573-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_0573\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-889\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">MSNBC&#8217;s set pieces are sprinkled throughout the entire coffee shop at Java Joe&#8217;s, blurring the line between restaurant and soundstage.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe came here because my husband Terry loves MSNBC,\u201d Klampe says. \u201cI\u2019d say the feeling here is energetic. There\u2019s lots of people here doing their jobs, which is exciting.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In spite of the all the action, Java Joe\u2019s still works to maintain a customer-friendly atmosphere. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cRegulars will come in and get coffee <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> we\u2019ll put it at the top of the order,\u201d Riggle says. \u201cThe one time people that are coming in from New York or Chicago, they\u2019re willing to wait and let our regulars be served first. Whoever comes into our coffeehouse, a presidential candidate, an executive of a show or \u2018Joe Schmoe\u2019 down the street, we\u2019re all about human interaction and building customer experience. It makes us feel good when we have good human interaction, and that\u2019s why we\u2019re able to stay involved in the caucuses and the local community.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>West End Architectural Salvage <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Four floors of antique furniture, jewelry and trinkets fill the warehouse-like space of West End Architectural Salvage, with the salvaged objects coming from New York, Chicago, England and the Middle East. In the series, owner Don Short and his team create up-cycled furniture and centerpieces in the workshop at West End that become the inspiration for customers\u2019 room redesigns. This TV production experience, combined with a recommendation from Iowa\u2019s Visitors Bureau, put West End Architectural Salvage on a list for potential shooting locations for NBC broadcasting during the days leading up to the caucuses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWest End was chosen because Iowa\u2019s Visitors Bureau gave NBC a list of all the hot spots, and we were on the list, and we\u2019d had TV action here before,\u201d employee Danielle Grimm says. \u201cNBC came here and fell in love. Our location had the most character.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What is normally a calm antique shopper\u2019s retreat turned into a destination to see the preparations for \u201cMeet the Press with Chuck Todd,\u201d \u201cNBC Nightly News with Lester Holt\u201d and \u201cThe Today Show\u201d for the first time this year. Although the coffee shop closed during filming, guests were still drawn to the action of the setup.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_898\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-898\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tmn.truman.edu\/detours\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/02\/DSC_0618.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-898\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-898 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/tmn.truman.edu\/detours\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/02\/DSC_0618-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_0618\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-898\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lester Holt of &#8220;NBC Nightly News&#8221; does a sound check while customers excitedly watch.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Given the wider, more open space of West End compared to Java Joe\u2019s, the atmosphere still maintained a balance between coffee shop calm and production set buzz. Groups sat huddled at small tables across from the coffee counter, and when seats were filled, the overflow guests stood alongside the entrance, but the space never felt crowded. A hush fell over the customers when Lester Holt did a soundcheck for the NBC Nightly News, and guests\u2019 faces showed varying degrees of awe and starstruck.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The use of West End as a shooting location also ties into a bigger trend in media representation of Des Moines during the Iowa caucuses. West End is just one of many downtown local businesses that have grown over the last decade and given <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/magazine\/story\/2016\/01\/how-des-moines-iowa-got-cool-213552\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Des Moines a stronger and more urban flavor<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201c[NBC] wanted something unique, not just another cornfield,\u201d West End manager Tony Zika says. \u201cThey\u2019re showing a different idea of Iowa. The attitude towards Des Moines from people who have visited has shifted. They realize everyone who lives here hasn\u2019t lived on a farm.
