Maybe it’s because I haven’t seen a good holiday film in a while, or because the stress of final projects is getting to me, but “Love the Coopers” melted this critic’s cynical heart into a warm glow of holiday cheer. This film took the trope of the usual family feel-good holiday movie, with a family getting together and the usual drama ensuing, and turned the emotion up to 10.
I think the reason this movie was so good at pushing emotional buttons is because it was relatable to everyone. Whether you’re trying to fix a failing relationship like John Goodman and Diane Keaton, or just trying to make enough money for presents like Ed Helms, there’s some part of the holiday drama we all have experienced before. Some of the characters might seem a bit cliche, but the fantastic acting more than makes up for it. There are so many characters, and all of the actors did such a fantastic job, that I can’t possibly name them all here. It’s truly a movie filled with talent.
Yes, it is a Christmas movie and Thanksgiving hasn’t even happened yet, but I would make an exception to the usual grace period of Black Friday and hurry to theaters to see “Love the Coopers” before it’s gone. It’s funny and heartwarming, and while the ending might be cheesy, it’s downright adorable.
