Graduate students create app to inform students about events

Truman State University has become the testing ground for the app Scrafl, created by two recent Truman State alumni, with plans to launch in Boston.

The app was created by Habib Nasir, a December 2024 graduate from Computer Science and Mohammed Abdikebir, a December 2023 graduate from Computer Science.

The goal of the app is to inform college students where various events are happening on their campus, as well as giving them the opportunity to promote their own specific events.

“There’s no simple way to find what everybody’s doing or what they’re interacting with, so I think we wanted to set up a place for a university calendar,” Nasir said. “What we wanted to do was basically put in new information and new organizations.”

The idea for Scrafl first came from a competition hosted by the Entrepreneur Foundation and the CCE, the Community of College Entrepreneurs. At the end of the event, Nasir and [Mohammed’s last name] ended up winning second place.

Following the competition, the Events Fair reached out to Nasir and [last name].

“That gave us motivation that this is something we should actually consider working on,” Nasir said.

Now that Scrafl has been created, Nasir hopes to launch the app in Boston, which has over 160,000 students in its colleges and universities.

Abby Moseley, a senior agricultural science major, has found a variety of events through using the app, such as the Haunted Corn Maze.

She finds that the color coordination and calendar feature help her keep track of events that she might be interested in.

“It’s easy to compare when events are…versus having to keep track of posters,” Moseley said. “It’s less chaotic, it’s more straightforward.”

Looking toward the future of the app, Moseley hopes that fellow Scrafl users will gain connection through its simplistic, organized approach to advertising events.

She also thinks it could be useful for future incoming freshmen.

“I feel like it could be a useful things when Student Week rolls around and we get new students,” Moseley said. “I’m hoping that they gain more connection.”
