Detweiler, Long win Kirksville City Council seats; tax passes

Richard Detweiler and Chuck Long won seats on the Kirksville City Council following today’s elections. Detweiler, who will be serving his fourth term on the City Council, received 28.45 percent of votes. Long won his seat with 21.37 percent of votes. This will be his first time serving as a councilman.

For the School Board of Directors for Kirksville R-III School District race, Gayla McHenry and John McConnell pulled ahead with 34.31 percent of votes and 24.43 percent of votes, respectively. Both will be serving for the first time.

Adair County voters also approved the extension of the Kirksville Economic Development Sales Tax with 72.89 percent of votes. This half-cent tax raises nearly $1.2 million each year, a majority of which goes to maintain roads and storm drainage.

This year, 18.95 percent of eligible voters cast a ballot, compared to last year’s 14.7 percent.
