OurView: Moving the Communication Department

In the Feb. 13 issue of the Index, staff writer Sydney Dial wrote a story on Barnett Hall moving academic services to central campus next year. As a Barnett-based organization, we, the Editorial Board, are excited to see how this change affects all the departments in Barnett.

We hope to see an equal space provided for all the departments moving over, departments who have made Barnett their home for many years. The transition could be very good at bringing the campus closer together. On a smaller campus like Truman, Barnett can sometimes feel like another world. This change could bring students who usually aren’t on the main campus closer to the student body.

The Truman Media Network has established itself as an organization located within Barnett. The radio station along with its equipment has been running programs from its studio since 1998 and the Index has likewise held its publication in Barnett for a significant amount of time. The Barnett community is strong, but we are looking forward to seeing how this reorganization will change the campus.

The move closer to other academic buildings is intended to ensure communication between similar departments. In this respect, we hope departments in Barnett are able to be transparent about what they expect from the transition.
