Set healthy boundaries
In the Aug. 12 edition of The Index, Managing Editor London Lamoureux wrote two stories about mental health. We, The Index Editorial Board, encourage new Bulldogs to take the time to set healthy boundaries for themselves as they sign up for new activities.
Truman Week is filled with learning about all the opportunities to get involved – Greek life, student organizations, sports and more. As exciting as these new opportunities are, it is important to consider how much you can handle on top of your coursework and personal life.
The typical Truman student is known for being overly involved. Truman students tend to overburden themselves with activities, classes and personal life to the point that they’re chronically stressed throughout the semester.
However, students shouldn’t shy away from extracurriculars or classes. You should take fun classes and attend meetings for clubs you’re interested in. This is the time to learn more about yourself. But it is important to prioritize your mental and physical health by setting boundaries and creating healthy habits. Make sure to listen to your body and mind as you enter a new phase of your life.
The Health Center provides counseling services, and Kirksville has several counseling services off campus. If you or someone you know is struggling, the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline is avaliable 24/7.
