Hot Take #1: Disliking popular music isn’t a personality trait

Hot Takes is a new series from KTRM featuring opinions from our DJs. Hear Freestyle Joey on 88.7 KTRM Tuesdays 10-11pm and Thursdays 11-midnight.

I remember wearing neon studded belts, chunky DC shoes and black tee shirts with illegible hardcore band names in red slash font. Me and my friends would laugh at the “conformists” and write off any music with over a million views on Youtube. Then the unimaginable happened — I turned 16 years old and realized what an elitist and juvenile mindset that was.

If you are an adult with these same views, maybe it’s time to re-evaluate some things. There is a lot of music that is popular solely because it is good music. You earn no extra cool points for avoiding popular music, actually it makes you seem like a try-hard. No one likes a try hard.
