StuGov Buzz: Schmidt, Alexander sworn in as president, vice-president

Happy last week of classes, Bulldogs! As the school year comes to a close, a new year in Student Government is just beginning. We are so honored and humbled to have been sworn in as your new Student Government President and Vice President on Sunday, and we can’t wait to see what the 2019-2020 school year has in store.

As we begin work on our campaign platform, we plan to focus on four core areas this upcoming year: communication, academic excellence, health and wellness, and community building. We have already laid the foundation for several projects, and we’re so excited to make our community the best it can be!

Over the summer and early fall, we will continue to work closely with faculty governance in discussions about the new curriculum. We also plan to further develop our idea of Course Threads, which will be a program of study that is similar to a minor but requires fewer courses for completion. Rather than focusing on a specific discipline, Course Threads take an interdisciplinary approach to a niche area of interest such as natural resources and sustainability, human rights and global culture.

Student Government is also moving forward with planning our second TEDx conference this November, as well as continuing to work with administration to construct a rock labyrinth meditation area in the green space where the former Fair Apartments once stood. We hope the rock labyrinth will be a peaceful place for students to relax during the school year.

If working on any of these projects sounds interesting to you or if you’d like to learn more about joining Student Government in general, please reach out to us! We will be filling committee chairships and membership positions through the end of the school year and into the fall semester, and we will also be holding elections in the fall for our open senator positions.

We are available through email at dks6214@truman.edu and kga5644@truman.edu. We’d love to hear from you to answer your questions about Student Government or to discuss how we can work towards your vision for Truman!

We wish you the best of luck with finals, and we hope you have a safe and fun summer!

Your President and Vice President,

Deanna Schmidt and Katie Alexander
